Hamilton Community Energy (HCE) is a 100% city-owned company that is partnered with Slate and DRAC on their proposed AI datacentres.
Council can use its shareholder powers to prohibit HCE from doing business for the purposes of developing AI datacentres.
For weeks, councillors have been discussing a motion to do exactly this.
The draft has been legally vetted. More than once.
But no one has brought it forward yet.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE COUNCIL LAST HEARD FROM US.
Call or email your Councillor. Let them know you support "the HCE motion" to put a moratorium on datacentre development until rules for AI datacentres actually exist. They still don't.
Send this link to friends. Talk about it. Post about it. People deserve to know Council has this power. Now they need to use it.
WHY THIS MOTION IS SO GOOD:
When councillors voted down the moratorium in July, some cited jurisdictional concerns.
They claimed there would be legal risk with an interim-control bylaw. (That's still up for debate, but hey, they claimed it.)
This mechanism is different. It is 100% within their jurisdiction.
The draft motion has been in the news. Every Councillor knows about it.
Time to remind Council how we feel about datacentres.
